Lynovex® has a unique, dual mucoactive-antibacterial mode of action which aggressively tackles both of the major clinical features responsible for progressive lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is a fatal respiratory disease for which a complete re-think is clearly required as regards the much-needed solution for a more effective, safe, long-term therapy to improve lung function in those patients affected.
Current respiratory treatment options for CF patients are limited and focus primarily on either the recurrent infections or the over-production of mucous. NovaBiotics' ambition is to develop a novel, multi-functional treatment that addresses both of these issues (and more) and is therefore effective in improving lung function and prevent degenerative lung damage over the longer term.
Lynovex® is the first drug candidate to be able to break down the excessive mucous produced by the lining of the CF airways and at the same time, kill the bacteria responsible for the recurrent respiratory infections characterisic of this progressive condition. Lynovex® not only kills bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia but prevents and disrupts formation of the slimy biofilms which these pathogens create in order to establish long-term, antibiotic insensitive infections in the CF lung environment.
Lynovex® can be administered by a number of routes including inhalation and can be used alone as a monotherapy or even more effectively, in combination with currently available, inhaled or otherwise administered antibiotics.
It's unique drug characteristics provide the maximum opportunity for Lynovex® to succeed clinically where conventional therapies for CF (and other respiratory infections) have thus far failed or been less than wholly successful. Moreover, as a drug already approved for oral delivery in an unrelated orphan metabolic disease, Lynovex® has already been proven as safe and well tolerated providing the potential for fast-track clinical development.
